The beginning

Antonio Pereira Ignacio, a Portuguese immigrant, acquired the assets from the bankrupt’s estate of Banco União. Among the properties, there was a textile factory located in the region of Sorocaba (SP). Votorantim begins, under the name of Sociedade Anonyma Fabrica Votorantim.

New perspectives

José Ermírio de Moraes assumes the commercial management of the Sociedade Anonyma Fabrica Votorantim.

Factory on board

Votorantim diversifies its business with the creation of Nitro Química Brasileira, one of the country's first chemical industries. José Ermírio de Moraes and his partner Wolf Klabin acquire the synthetic silk production equipment of the US company Tubize Chatillon, which went bankrupt. All the machinery of the installed company of the State of Virginia (USA) was dismantled and brought by ship to Brazil.

Built to last

Start-up of Santa Helena unit, the first cement plant built by Votorantim, located in the region of Sorocaba (SP). The brand Votoran is introduced to the market.

Long Steel

Start-up of Barra Mansa Steel Mil, in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro, at a time of diversification of Brazilian industrial activity, encouraged by the Getúlio Vargas government.

CEMENT IN THE NORTHEAST

Implementation of the Poty Cement Plant, in the city of Paulista, in Pernambuco. The factory marks the beginning of the national expansion of Votorantim Industries and starts to commercialize the brand of Poty cement in northeast Brazil.

METALLURGICAL

To serve the Votorantim's own need for heavy industrial equipment, the Metalúrgica Atlas is inaugurated in the western part of the city of São Paulo.

FLEXIBLE FILMS

Votocel, a producer of transparent paper and flexible packaging films, starts its operations in the city of Votorantim, in the interior of São Paulo.

CEMENT IN PARANÁ

In a new strategy of expansion, Votorantim Industries started the activities of the Portland Cement Company Rio Branco, in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, Paraná. Currently, the Rio Branco cement plant is the largest in Latin America.

CBA

Votorantim inaugurates Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio in the region of Sorocaba (SP), a milestone in the company's history. The ceremony is attended by the then President of the Republic, Café Filho, and the then state governor, Jânio Quadros.

NICKEL

Votorantim assumes control of Companhia Níquel Tocantins, a nickel producer located in the state of Goiás.

THE FIRST POWER PLANT

The first hydroelectric plant built by Votorantim, the Usina do França, is inaugurated on the Juquiá River, in the Vale do Ribeira region, in São Paulo. The plant supplies power to the CBA and was the first of a series of seven power plants built in the region over three decades.

ZINC

The Companhia Mineira de Metais, the first zinc industry of Votorantim, is inaugurated. With units in the cities of Vazante and Três Marias in Minas Gerais, the company's first activities are focused on the production of electrolytic zinc.

Itaú Cement

Votorantim assumes control of Itaú Cement, and incorporates this brand into its portfolio of cement brands. The company operates in five states and produces lime, in addition to cement.

EXPANSION IN THE NORTHEAST

The Cement Sergipe S.A., Cimesa, commenced its operations in the city of Laranjeiras. The unit marks the expansion of Votorantim Cimentos in the northeastern market.

PULP

VCP - Votorantim Celulose e Papel  was founded from the acquisition of the Celpav project, from the former Guatapará Cia. With this company, Votorantim consolidated its position in the pulp and paper market, with a forest base of 80 thousand hectares of eucalyptus planted in the interior of São Paulo.

ORANGE JUICE

Citrovita, a company dedicated to the production and trade of orange juice and its derivatives, started its activities with an industrial unit in Catanduva (SP) and its own orange production farm located in Itapetininga (SP).

BANK

Banco Votorantim, created in 1988 as a security dealer (DTVM), opens its operations to the external public with investment and capital financing operations.

GROWTH IN PULP & PAPER INDUSTRY

Votorantim Celulose e Papel acquired Papel Simão, a pulp and paper producer that added to the company a capacity of 220 thousand tons / year of pulp and 250 thousand tons / year of paper.

ENERGY

Votorantim Energia is created, a company dedicated to managing Votorantim's energy assets, as well as providing energy management and energy efficiency solutions for the company's portfolio companies.

ORANGE IN MATÃO

Citrovita acquires the industrial unit of Cambuhy in Matão (SP), increasing its productive capacity of orange juice.

INTERNATIONALIZATION

With the acquisition of St. Marys Cement in Canada, Votorantim takes the first step towards the company's internationalization. Currently, Votorantim is present in 23 countries.

NEW CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

Votorantim implements a new model of governance, by establishing a balance between family ownership and control and the group of executives managing the various businesses. Votorantim Participações, the holding company is established to manage three new business segments: Votorantim Industrial, Votorantim Finanças (which controls Banco Votorantim) and Votorantim Novos Negócios, a venture capital investment company.

Instituto Votorantim

The Votorantim Institute is created as a core of social strategy for the portfolio companies, aiming at enhancing the results of external social investment in the communities where the company is present. Today, the Institute operates in 151 municipalities in four countries.

CONCRETE

Engemix, a company that provides concreting services, is acquired, which allows Votorantim Cimentos to integrate concrete into its portfolio.

MEMORY RESCUE

The Memória Votorantim (Votorantim Memory) was rolled-out during the celebrations of the company's 85th anniversary. The project consists of a documentation and research center responsible for the legacy and preservation of the history of Votorantim, which develops a cataloging and recording work of the employees' oral history.

Peru

Votorantim Metais acquires a refinery in Cajamarquilla, in Peru, increasing zinc production by 67% and marking the beginning of the mining and production platform in the Latin American country.

CSC

The Shared Solutions Center (CSC) is created in Curitiba (PR). It is a Center of Excellence of services in the areas of accounting, controlling, payroll and people management, among others, which serves all Votorantim companies. In 2014, a CSC operation was established in Peru and currently employs about 600 people.

MILPO

Votorantim Metais acquires 24.9% of Milpo, one of the largest zinc miners in Peru, substantially increasing its performance in the country. Currently, Votorantim holds 80.24% of its share capital.

COLOMBIA

Votorantim acquires former Colombian state-owned Acerías PazdelRío in an auction held by international groups. PazdelRío is one of the most traditional steel mills in that country and was created by the Colombian government in 1948.

GOVERNANCE IN IT

The Competence Center in Information Technology (CCTI) is created to seek synergies and generate gains in scale in the company's IT management. Acting as a center of excellence, it now provides customized solutions, in addition to standardizing the systems adopted by companies. The center of excellence has several certifications and is one of the largest operations of integrated management systems (ERP) in the country.

ARGENTINA

Votorantim acquires shares in the Argentinean company Aceros Bragado (Acerbrag), Argentina's second largest long steel producer, expanding its long steel production to three Latin American countries.

NEW STEEL MILL

Start-up of Votorantim Siderurgia plant in Resende (RJ), with a production capacity of 1 million tons of long steel per year.

FIBRIA

Fibria, the world's largest pulp producer, is created as a result of the merger between Votorantim Celulose and Papel (VCP) and Aracruz.

VOTORANTIM SIDERURGIA

Votorantim Siderurgia is created, a holding that now includes the operation of Siderúrgica Barra Mansa and the recently inaugurated Resende mill, both in Rio de Janeiro, as well as shareholdings in PazdelRío (Colombia) and Acerbrag (Argentina).

GROWTH IN PERU

Votorantiom Metais takes control of Milpo, which was already the third largest zinc miner in Peru.

EUROPE, ASIA AND AFRICA

Votorantim Cimentos acquires shares in the Portuguese cement company Cimpor, expanding its operations in the sector to a total of 13 countries, and taking its brand to Europe, Asia and Africa.

CITROSUCO

Votorantim's Citrovita and Fischer Group’s Citrosuco concluded an agreement to merge their activities, consolidating the position of the world's largest producer of orange juice, which retains the name Citrosuco.

Legado das Águas

The Legado das Águas, the largest private reserve of Atlantic forest in the country, with 31 thousand hectares, is launched in partnership with the Government of the State of São Paulo. Votorantim protected the lands for more than 50 years in the Vale do Ribeira region, in the Southern region of the state, to ensure the supply of water to the hydroelectric power plants and the supply of the local population.

VOTORANTIM DNA

Votorantim formalized its management model in Votorantim DNA for all companies. At that moment the holding company consecrates its role of a portfolio manager.

 

REAL ESTATE ASSETS

The Real Estate Solutions Center (CSI) is created, another Votorantim center of excellence, responsible for the management of the company's real estate assets. CSI manages a total of 797 thousand hectares distributed throughout Brazil, including operational and strategic areas (such as factories, mines, forests, power plants and distribution centers), farms and real estate properties.

WIND ENERGY

Votorantim Energia announces the entry into the wind power sector, with the investment of R $ 1.1 billion in the construction of seven wind farms in the northeast of the country. The Ventos do Piauí project will start operating in 2018.

PORTFOLIO MANAGER

The company promotes a simplification of the structure of holding companies, by creating the Votorantim S.A., which manages the portfolio of investments that holds shares in companies. This new holding replaces the previous Votorantim Participações and Votorantim Industrial.

STEEL MILL AGREEMENT

Votorantim and ArcelorMittal Brasil entered into an agreement involving their long steel operations in Brazil, whereby Votorantim's steel operations in Brazil became subsidiaries of ArcelorMittal and Votorantim SA will become a shareholder of ArcelorMittal Brasil, with a capital corresponding to 15% of the combined long steel business.
